More Information
Program Summary
When we connect with our Afghan neighbors to build relationships, we create our ability to strengthen our community and help them acclimate to their surroundings. Through our interactions refugees increase their knowledge of the American culture and develop skills to find success within their new culture.
What is a Family Assistant
Being a Family Assistant is an opportunity to mentor refugees who live in Stillwater. Opportunities include meeting with our Afghan friends weekly or every other week, assisting in helping them get places like a grocery store, going to yard sales, being a presence during a difficult transition, attending local activities with an Afghan friend, teaching them to navigate the schools, or practicing speaking English with them.
OSU & ECAR
Oklahoma State University has recently joined the ECAR (Every Campus a Refuge), a network which supports universities and colleges that are engaged in refugee resettlement processes in their communities, and formed a campus advisory committee to provide oversight and input into the university’s ongoing efforts around refugee resettlement.
