Women Abroad

The majority of students who study abroad are women. However, every culture maintains different views about, roles of, and attitudes towards (wo)men. Media portrayals have shown American women in multiple roles, which have helped change attitudes and inspire others, but have also reinforced negative stereotypes.

The way you dress, your body language, and other acceptable behaviors in the United States may be forbidden or taboo in your host country. Certain actions may draw unwanted attention. The OSU Study Abroad/NSE Office encourages you to research the culture of women in your destination and speak with a study abroad advisor prior to departure in an effort to better understand your host country.
