Other Funding Opportunities for Study Abroad

 

There are many opportunities outside of OSU for funding study abroad. Each year students from OSU successfully apply for many of these awards as a way to fund their programs.

 

Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship

The Gilman Scholarship Program is administered by the Institute of International Education and broadens the student population that studies abroad by supporting undergraduates who have been traditionally underrepresented in US study abroad and those with high financial need. Awards are up to $5,000. To be eligible, students must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application.

 

Deadlines:

For Fall/Academic Year programs: early March                    

For Spring programs: October

 

 

Critical Language Scholarship Program (CLS)

The CLS Program is part of a U.S. government effort to expand dramatically the number of Americans studying and mastering critical need foreign languages. Students of diverse disciplines and majors are encouraged to apply. Participants are expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period, and later apply their critical language skills in their future professional careers.

Boren Scholarships (National Security Education Program [NSEP])

This program awards scholarships to American undergraduate and graduate students to study in foreign countries and world regions critical to U.S. national security. NSEP awards are available for a maximum of $10,000 per semester or $20,000 per academic year. The competition is merit-based. Students may apply for study in summer, fall, and spring.

Phi Kappa Phi Undergraduate Study Abroad Grant

The competition is open to qualified members and non-members in all fields of study. Criteria include: 1) must be enrolled at an institution that has an active Phi Kappa Phi chapter and have a minimum academic grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. 2) All applicants must have earned a minimum of 56 semester hours of academic credit but not more than 90 semester hours on or before April 15 . 3) The applicant must be accepted into a study abroad program at the time of application.

Rotary Scholarships

Scholarship provides funding for various types of study in another country. This award is intended to help cover round-trip transportation, tuition, fees, room and board expenses, and some educational supplies up to U.S. $23,000 or its equivalent. Apply one year in advance.

Fulbright US Student Program

Over 1500 grants for individual research and English teaching abroad are awarded each year.

Bridging Scholarships FC Study Abroad in Japan

The United States-Japan Bridging Foundation funds scholarships through AATJ to help students to study abroad in Japan.

 

Deadline: Students planning to study in Japan beginning in Fall 2019 should apply in Spring 2019. 

 

 

FEA Study Abroad Scholarship

Eligible undergraduate students, participating in a study abroad program for a minimum of 4 weeks during the Summer 2019, Fall 2019, or Academic Year 2019-2020 are encouraged to apply. Awards ranging from $1,250 to $10,000 based on financial need and time abroad. 

 

 

Diverse International Woman of Color Scholarship (DIWC)

Provides funding to assist women of color who are exceptional in their studies and in need of financial assistance to pursue studies abroad. Awards are in the amount of $500 and will be awarded to women of color who have been accepted to study abroad on a program during the Summer 2021 term.
